Don't get taken for a ride: Use pre-booked licensed taxis

It is important to remember that at university you are entirely responsible for your own personal safety.

Know your destination
If you're not sure of your location pay Googlemaps a visit and work out where you need to go. If you are going somewhere local your students' union will be able to help out too.

Plan your route
Don't leave it to the last minute to plan your journey home. Figure out how you'll get there - and more importantly - how you'll get back.

Walking home
Regardless of whether you are male or female you should never walk home alone. If walking is your only option pair up with friends so you are not on your own. Stick to well-lit main roads and never take shortcuts through alleyways, across parks, woodland or open spaces.

Public transport
If you are relying on public transport to get around make sure you know when the last bus, tram, tube or train is.

Don't get taken for a ride
Watch out for rogue taxis and make sure the driver confirms your name and destination before you get in the car. Also check the driver's photo ID. Your students' union will be able to recommend licensed companies which you should use to pre-book taxis.

  • If you are in London a service called Cabwise can find licensed taxis near you via the GPS on your phone. Text the word CAB to 60835 and Cabwise will text back two minicab numbers and one black cab number.

Remember alcohol is a drug
Drinking will impair your judgement no matter how much or little you drink. Try to drink responsibly and in moderation. It's especially important to have all your wits about you when going out with people you don't know well, or to a place you are not familiar with.

Drink spiking
You can easily prevent your drink from being spiked by keeping it with you at all times. Never leave your drink, even for just a few minutes. If you think your drink has been spiked seek help from someone that you trust. Make sure they take you to A&E or call for an ambulance. Report the incident to the police and if you have some of the drink left, keep it, as it can be used as evidence.
